Inspired by Rembrandt's painting, The Ox, located in the Louvre, Soutine procured the entire carcass of a steer and painted four similar versions of The Carcass of Beef, as well as several sketches and smaller canvases. Other versions exist in The Municipal Museum, Amsterdam, The Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, New York, and Musée de Peinture et de Sculpture, Grenoble, France.
