A contemporary card manufacturer specializes in dual-purpose decks. U.S. Games Systems, Inc. of Stamford, CT, makes standard card decks, tarot decks, and specialty decks of all kinds. They also produce a series of decks that allow for matching games based loosely on the game of Authors. Developed in the 19th century, Authors itself is something like the game rummy. Instead of matching suits, players match titles from a single author. In these contemporary games, players match "books" of like-numbered cards, each printed with facts dealing with the subject of the game. In the Uniforms of the Civil War game, for example, all the 10 cards are marked with facts about four different Zouave uniforms. As in the Authors game, players can learn historic facts about the game's subject as they play. The deck allows for standard card game play as well. The firm produces many different versions of this game from contemporary Authors to multiple war subjects, and more.
