"Schwarzer Peter" ist the German version of the popular Victorian card game "Old Maid". It is played by collecting and discarding pairs, with the single “Schwarzer Peter” card left for the loser. While "Black Peter" initially probably referred to famous German highwayman and charcoal burner Johann Peter Petri (*1752, † around 1812), the first half of the 20th century saw the unpopular loser's card changing towards stereotypical representation of persons of colour, which serves as en example of the blunt everyday racism of the time.
