League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game, developed and published by Riot Games and originally released in 2009. The game is free to play, but players may pay small fees, called microtransactions, to purchase characters, costumes, icons, emotes, and special powers. Players take on the role of fictional characters, or champions, each of whom possesses a unique skill set. During a match, champions level up and become more powerful, and players can earn gold to spend on weapons and other items. These items, as well as the champion's experience, are unique to each match and do not carry over to subsequent matches, allowing players to begin relatively equally.
