In this photo, students learn about construction materials from the Koppers Company from a Homewood Elementary School teacher. Homewood School was named for the Pittsburgh neighborhood in which it was located. Located at Hamilton and North Lang Avenues, the school opened in 1891 and housed 15 recitation rooms, an auditorium, a teacher’s room, and two offices. A 1905 addition added a gymnasium and 12 recitation rooms. The elementary school closed in 1980 and was converted to a Montessori magnet school.
