Jeanne Bourgeois, artistically known as Mistinguett (Enghien-les-Bains, Val-d'Oise, Île-de-France, April 5, 1875 - Bougival, January 5, 1956) was a French singer and actress. She debuted at the Casino de Paris in 1895, also appearing in shows at Folies Bergère, at the Moulin Rouge, and at Eldorado. The sensuality of her performances captivated Paris, making her the most popular star of her time and the highest paid in the world. In 1919, her legs were covered by an insurance policy, for the insured amount of 500,000 francs, a millionaire at the time. Despite being a symbol of the 1920s, Mistinguett had a very long career. Known since the end of the 19th century, she didn't stop working until her death in the 50s. She also launched a lot of fashion. Long before Coco Chanel, Mistinguett already wore his short hair and crossed his legs elegantly, in addition to smoking a lot, a habit that, before her, was restricted to men only. It was a symbol of boldness and avant-garde, when the twentieth century had not yet emerged completely. She died at the age of 80, on January 5, 1956, and is buried in the cemetery of Enghien-les-Bains, in Île-de-France, France.
