Part of the “Little Rock Nine” Carlotta Walls and eight other African American students integrated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957 amidst controversy and violence.

This act of courage and defiance by the “Little Rock Nine” sparked dramatic challenges to the racially segregated American public educational system throughout the nation. LaNier’s family moved to Colorado in 1962, where she earned a B. A. from the University of Northern Colorado, married, raised two children, and founded a real estate company. The Congressional Gold Medal was presented to the Little Rock Nine in 1999 for their contributions to the cause of equality.

“I was not going to give up, because that way they would’ve won.” — Carlotta Walls LaNier
