Carol Lafayette Boyd was born on a farm near McGee, Saskatchewan, on May 17, 1942. She was born to descendants of those who had migrated to Canada from Iowa in 1906 and from Oklahoma in 1910. Her paternal great-grandfather was a descendant of formerly enslaved Virginians who moved to Iowa in 1870, and then moved with her grandfather to Canada in 1906. Her mother's grandparents, along with over 200 other people at the time, moved to Canada from Oklahoma in 1910 and settled in Maidstone and Amber Valley (formerly Pine Creek).
