A Chinese story told how a carp leapt
up the rapids of the Yellow River and
became a dragon. Carp are symbols of
perseverance, as well as fertility, because
of the many eggs they lay.
Inscribed on the print are poems by three
different poets which refer to carp, cherry
blossom, the vigour of a dragon and rivers
in Edo (Tokyo). The dragon represents
the fifth month of the year in the Japanese
monthly cycle of zodiac animals.
