The painter and designer Otto Eckmann became known as a designer for book art and typography, but also as a designer of furniture and metal utensils. Eckmann studied Japanese art intensively. Thus the swan carpet with its steep portrait format appears like a kakemon, a Japanese scroll painting. Natural motifs are represented in an abstract and planar way, as in Japanese art and paired with modern design principles. The swan was often used as an art nouveau motif.
