“This (cartonería) papier-mâché Nativity was made in San Ángel, a neighborhood of Mexico City. The set includes the Holy Family and the wise men. The delicate faces of the figures and the elaborate drapery of their garments indicate a high level of skill on the part of the artist. The making of papier-mâché sculptures, cartonería, is a traditional craft with a long history in Mexico. It was originally introduced during the Spanish Colonial period for the purpose of making artwork for churches. Cartonería are made throughout the year for a wide variety of religious festivals, including Day of the Dead, Holy Week, and Christmas. Mexico City is a major center of production. Today fewer of the younger generation in Mexico are learning this craft, but certain cultural organizations are trying to preserve the tradition.” (Ed and Kirsten Gyllenhaal, label text, “World Nativities 2020”)
