The second half of the twentieth century further developed the tendencies of the preceding two decades. On on hand, technological evolution continued to improve the quality of sound systems. On the other, it made its products available to an increasingly broader public and at ever lower costs. In the field of sound reproduction, the birth of the long - playing record, stereophony and the concepst of high fidelity were fundamental stages equivalent in the radiophonic field to the invention of the transistor - the miniaturised element that substituted tha valve and enabled the construction of smaller, more economic radio equipement. In the same period, another technological resource emanating from the professional sphere entered the market: magnetic tape recording. Its versatile products found employment in both professional and amateur domains, at low cost and for casual use.
