Casa Navarro State Historic Site
San Antonio, United States

The Texas Historical Commission has administered the property since 2008. The mission of Casa Navarro is to preserve and maintain the historical integrity of the site’s buildings, while interpreting 19th-century Tejano culture through the life and times of José Antonio Navarro. A nonprofit organization, Friends of Casa Navarro, lends additional support for educational events and ongoing care of the site. In 2017, the National Park Service named Casa Navarro State Historic Site a National Historic Landmark (NHL). The NHL program highlights places of exceptional historic significance to the nation. Casa Navarro joins other NHLs in Texas including the Alamo, the Texas State Capitol, and Apollo Mission Control Center. Casa Navarro State Historic Site is steeped in history and heritage. This simple home on South Laredo Street is a lasting memorial to the lost neighborhood of Laredito. Here, footsteps echo of a young rebel in Spanish Texas, a successful businessman in Mexican Texas, a Tejano patriot for the Republic, a representative for the State of Texas, and an attentive husband and father. Casa Navarro, once home to the man, is now home to the story of José Antonio Navarro.
