We propose to enter the Casa Onggi, a time travel on multiple scales: from the manufacturing ritual of ceramic pieces to the daily process of Kimchi production to the generational succession of knowledge from the master to the apprentice. The placing of Casa Onggi within DDP is a declaration of intent; one of the main symbols of modernity in Seoul hosting one of the most perfected processes in Korean tradition. At a time when the city became so vulnerable, and in the Korean tradition of every family making their own Kimchi, onggi acts as a key element in the sustainability of the urban life system. After the Biennale, these artisan pieces, donated by the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Holder “Onggijang” Jung Yoonsuk and his successor Jung Yeong Gyun, will once again be used to participate in the cabbage fermentation rituals.
