With the creations of Ettore Sottsass the visitor is
faced with a clear break with tradition. His furniture was the expression of a
trend in Italian design that opposed mass production and the
"rationally" functional, considered to be devoid of originality. In his Italian design and
architecture collective Memphis (1981-1987), Sottsass created exclusive pieces
of interior decor and furniture, with forms and colour choices able to move the
emotions and the senses. His Casablanca living
room piece, in fact, looks more like a dynamic sculpture than something
destined as furniture. And yet the materials
used, such as plastic laminates, printed glass and veneers, although ennobled,
belong to industrial production
