Case for a Food Offering

Limestone. Old Kingdom, Dynasty 6, 2345-2181 B.C. From Giza, Tomb of the vizier Khnumenti. Goose and duck were popular foods which the tomb owner would have wanted to take with him to the afterlife. This stone case is carved to look like the trussed and dressed bird it originally contained.
