Bannerman’s “Castle” on Pollepel Island has inspired numerous artists, including Susan Leopold, Brad Marshall, and Sylvia Sleigh.
Susan Leopold first created this artwork as part of a site-specific installation at the Hudson River Museum in 2005. Her mixed media construction played with perspective, the poetry of decay, and the bizarre history of one of the Hudson River’s most dramatic landmarks. Francis Bannerman, an eccentric industrialist, housed his huge collection of munitions in the simulated Scottish castle, which he completed in 1917.
