Dominating the landscape, the Howard family mausoleum at Castle Howard was designed in 1726-29 by Nicholas Hawksmoor for Charles Howard. It was influenced by the Tomb of Cecilia, which was built just outside of Rome in the first century BC. Howard's mausoleum was eventually built between 1729 and 1742. Its vaulted crypt contains sixty-three catacombes.
