Castle Rushen is a very perfect ruin, and had not the lead which covered the roofs been shamefully taken off a few years ago, in order to build some barracks for soldiers in the castle, it would be now with respect to walls &c. exactly as strong as when it was first built.' (The Duke of Rutland's 'Journal of a Tour through North and South Wales and the Isle of Man' 1797, M 02435)
