A large cat lies in the grass and stares unconcernedly at the viewer. Cats were a common subject of Mary’s and she often placed them in front of a unique range of landscapes. Mary liked creating ‘beautiful paintings’, using bright and pleasing colours. Here the soft lines of the hilly landscape contrast to the sharp details of the field and cat.
