Sharecropper is said to have been inspired by Catlett’s childhood visits to her grandparents farm in North Carolina. Rather than depict a distressed figure laboring under harsh working conditions and sweltering economic disenfranchisement, Catlett represents Sharecropper with an air of monumentality. Her finely chiseled facial features add to her strong presence.
