Cavers above Eldon Hole, Derbyshire

Known as one of the Wonders of the Peak, Eldon Hole, is located half a mile north from Peak Forest, and is a famous perpendicular chasm. Its mouth is about 90 feet in length, and 30 in breadth in the widest part. The interior of the chasm is described as consisting of two parts - one small like an oven, the other very spacious, and in form like the dome of a glasshouse, communicating with each other by a small arched passage.

Eldon Hole was once thought to be a bottomless refuge for the Devil. Folklore suggests that a man was lowered down, found to be unconscious when he was raised and died soon afterwards. Investigation in the 18th century proved the Hole to be around 60 yards deep.
