When Piero Gilardi was just a few months old, his family moved from their home in Turin to a rental home in the countryside due to the war. Images of the rustic environment of his childhood remained engrained in the artist’s subconscious and reemerged in several of his works, above all in his earlier ones, such as Cavoli sotto la neve. This piece illustrates a winter vegetable garden, behind the house, where the cabbages are surrounded by the snow.
