The earliest detailed documentary record of a manor house at Caynton dates to 1584. The house appears to have been demolished or destroyed by the end of the 17th century. The surviving gatehouse was built in about 1635. Built in red brick on a red sandstone base, it has two floors with rooms flanking a central passageway. It was later converted to farm use.
