Strawberry Shortcake began as a figure on greeting cards in the late 1970s and early 80s. Kenner started marketing these scented dolls in 1980 and included such friends as Huckleberry Pie, Blueberry Muffin, and Apple Dumplin' with her hard shelled friend Tea Time Turtle. These dolls all had flat hands. Later on, there would also be the addition of Apricot with her pet Hopsalot Bunny, Lemon Meringue, Orange Blossom, Raspberry Tart, and the villain Purple Pieman with Berry Bird. These dolls had curved hands. By 1981, more friends were introduced, as well as pets. Baby doll-sized versions also sold in the mid-1980s as did miniature figures. An international version, including Crepe Suzette from France was also introduced in 1983. In the late 1980s, Kenner sold the licensing of the dolls. It was picked up again briefly in the 1990s. Playmates reinvigorated the dolls around 2005.
