Leeds were the favourites ithis match, dubbed the Battle of Britain. An incredible 136,505 squeezed into Hampden for the match – with that figure still standing as a record for any UEFA competition. Celtic dismantled Leeds over the two legs, winning 3-1 and with Jimmy Johnstone putting in peerless performance. Leeds’ Norman Hunter later named Celtic ‘the best I ever played against’ while Allan Clarke praised Johnstone as ‘magnificent’.
