Tange designed this memorial to the victims of the Hiroshima atomic bomb based on an idea by the Japanese-American sculptor Isamu Noguchi. It was originally constructed (in 1952) in concrete but this had deteriorated to such a degree that the memorial was rebuilt in 1985 in granite.
