The central London Railway (C.L.R.) opened in 1900. It was the first Tube line to span London's central area. The easy connection provided from the residential suburbs around Shepherd's Bush to the City, via the busy West End, also brought the C.L.R. commercial success. This poster was published in around 1905 to promote the efficiency and comfort of the railway. The line was known as the 'Twopenny Tube', because of its initial flat fare of 2d (2 pence). The nickname stuck, even after a graduated fare was introduced in 1907.
