Mercado de la Ciudad (City Market) was the predecessor to the city’s current market. It was the first to provide a roof for the various, scattered markets in Santiago de Compostela at the time. The food market in Santiago de Compostela today was built in 1941, and has become one of Spain's best-known markets. It is the city’s second-most popular attraction. Visitors are drawn by the variety and quality of fresh produce, as well as the craft stalls and different catering areas run by the market’s cafés, where purchased products can be cooked up on the spot.
