An image from the photo reportage on the new Central Post Office in Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island in the Azores archipelago which was officially opened in November 1954. The photographs show various vistas of the building’s façade: lit at night, the public waiting room, the mail handling and sorting room, and the parcel handling room. It also includes the following images: a photograph showing a view of the location from the sea; apparatus from the radio-electrical department; the antenna from the radio-electrical department in Camarinhas (São Miguel Island); and work being undertaken on the Telephone Station with details of the mounting of frames (21/09/1957) and the installation of the first cable (09/10/1957). In June 1959, CTT opened the Automatic Telephone Exchange and the Ponta Delgada Subterranean Cable Network and Hertzian cables between the islands of the Azores.
