Musée de l'Archéologie de l'Ontario

Musée de l'Archéologie de l'Ontario
London, Canada

In 1997, this ceramic dog’s head was excavated from the mid-19th century Edgar archaeological site, located in the city of Vaughan, by Archaeological Services Inc. This dog figurine, sometimes called a fireplace dog, pot dog or Staffordshire dog, is a type of decorative ceramic that commonly adorned the mantel places of 19th century homes, often in pairs. Staffordshire potters in England were the first to produce these ornamental dogs in large quantities.
