This pottery fragment was once part of a complete vessel that had been decorated with incised signs. It was created during the reign of Den in Dynasty 1, between ca. 3110-3020 BCE. The fragment was found in a tomb, and the incised marks look like the sign for "god" and the phonetic sign "h." Several other vessels in the tomb had these signs, suggesting that these vessels might have come from the same workshop.
