Thomas Day was a free man of color in antebellum North Carolina who achieved substantial success as a master cabinetmaker and businessman. Day may have made chairs of this model. Alternatively, he may have resold chairs of this type that originated in the mid-Atlantic region. Numerous essentially identical examples have established connections to his sales of furnishings.
