Tallinn City Museum
Tallinn, Estonia

The chair’s backrest and the centre of the seat is made of a leathery, low-relief patterned plywood, the luxurious turned details are still clearly historical.
Birch, plywood models no. 352 and 357, height 103 cm.

The plywood chairs were made in Tallinn by the Mechanical Carpentry Company A. M. Luther (Luterma in 1898–1940) in the 1890s. Because of their competitive production and product development, Luterma became one of the most important developers of new plywood technologies in Europe. The earlier works of the company, founded in 1877, connected the woodworking technologies from the USA with the beloved historical style of the Central European furniture producers. Still, they began to develop more ergonomic furniture suitable for mass production. The company produced exclusive custom furniture sets, American office furniture as well as low-cost and high-quality home furnishings.
