Tallinn City Museum
Tallinn, Estonia

The seat and the backrest of this chair were made of a single piece of curved plywood, decorated with perforations. The top of the backrest has a handle for easier handling. This type of chair was still in production even in the 1920s.
Birch, chair no. 1777, perforated hole-patterned plywood no. 307, height 90 cm.

The plywood chairs were made in Tallinn by the Mechanical Carpentry Company A. M. Luther (Luterma in 1898–1940) in the 1890s. Because of their competitive production and product development, Luterma became one of the most important developers of new plywood technologies in Europe. The earlier works of the company, founded in 1877, connected the woodworking technologies from the USA with the beloved historical style of the Central European furniture producers. Still, they began to develop more ergonomic furniture suitable for mass production. The company produced exclusive custom furniture sets, American office furniture as well as low-cost and high-quality home furnishings.
