Lisboa, Portugal

Square chalice veil with elaborately embroidered polychrome silk motifs on white silk. In the centre a circular cartouche is embroidered in light yellow silk to imitate gold, with alternating straight and zigzagging rays radiating outwards, the IHS at its centre with three nails below and the cross above, representing the Trigraph of Christ or Jesuit Insignia. In each of the four corners and centrally-placed on each side, we see delicately-rendered floral compositions depicting tulips, carnations, marigolds and other flowers. The grouping is edged in silver thread braiding.
