The square surface is covered with the same material as the rest of the ornate. In the middle of it, the even-sided cross framed by rays is embroidered with metal thread. Silk-embroidered flowers looking like peonies, and small carnations point towards the centre from the corners. The composition is framed by a thin rim stripe shot with gold.
The hard cover, decorated as the other parts of the vestments, was used to keep insects from the wine in the chalice.
