Chalice-veil

The symmetric flower roots on the four corners of the cloth are composed of pomegranates and carnations. They point towards the centre, where the monogram IHS, referring to Jesus Christ, can be seen inside a wreath of gold tulips. The cloth is framed by gold and silver tulips under a series of arches. The regular repetition of gold and silver and the various types of stitches used make a really thrilling surface. Lined with yellowish-green silk fabric.
During mass, the chalice was most often covered with veils made of the same fabric as the priest’s vestments. This chalice-veil is a lovely example of typical Hungarian noble embroidering, merging Eastern and Western motifs.
