This photograph of the chalk cliffs at Beachy Head shows evidence of coastal erosion. In the distance is Beachy Head Lighthouse, which was completed in 1902. It was designed by Sir Thomas Matthews, engineer-in-chief for Trinity House, which in 1566 was given the power to build lighthouses for the protection of seafarers.
