Chameleons are famed for their colour-changing abilities. However, when it comes to camouflage, chameleons only make small adjustments to the shade of their generally green or brown skin. Research shows that the bursts of red, orange and yellow seen in some chameleons are used to attract mates or scare off rivals rather than to help them hide from predators.
