Lecce, Italy

The chapel dedicated to Saint Irene - virgin, martyr and Saint Patron of the city until 1656 - is located in the left section of the crypt of the Duomo of Lecce. It is supported by plain-shafted columns made of local stone, surmounted by very peculiar capitals. The painting of the Saint, by an unknown artist and datable around 1700, is between two richly decorated spiral columns.
