Charcoal making, the conversion of forest firewood into charcoal, was one of the most important economic activities in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains and took place during the spring and summer months. The process began with a contractual agreement between the charcoal burner and the landowner, which stipulated which trees would be cut down and where the charcoal kiln and the charcoal burner's hut would be built.
