This is one of the four allegories positioned in the four corners of the tomb of General Lamoricière [(1806–1865) who distinguished himself in Algeria, was exiled by Napoleon III, and commanded the papal troops in 1860]. This work was exhibited in 1876. The Italian silkworm farmers had given Louis Pasteur "Courage," a bronze based on another allegory, from the same tomb. Louis Pasteur had it in his office in Paris; the Vallery-Radots gave it to Pasteur's birthplace in Dole.
