Charles III of Bourbon's portrait with a detail of the Citadel

Franz Pitner1852

The Duke, as verballyreported by Mario Zannoni, wears the uniform of captain general. In the past it was erroneously attributed to Joseph Friedrich Lentner, but a more careful research has later recognized the signature of Franz Pitner, a well-known Austrian painter of landscapes and genre scenes, who trained in Vienna, Rome and Venice. An almost identical version of the watercolor is preserved (slight variations are in the face and in the chromatic shades), signed and dated (1852) at the Constantinian Museum of the Steccata: the artwork, which is displayed in the Bourbon Room, is in a frame covered with blue velvet surmounted by the double monogram (C). Another specimen that differs only in some details is reproduced by Cecchini. But we are able to read Lentner's signature in it.
