"Charles Shaw" (1882). The painting is one of Millar's earliest known works. Painted when he was 22 out of a studio in Cortland, Ohio, the portrait showcased Millar's early style. At the time of this portrait, Millar began using light and bold brush strokes; this technique helped set him apart from his impressionist counterparts.

The subject of the portrait, Charles Shaw, passed away shortly after it was completed. He was 21 at the time of this painting.
