Postcard with photographic portrait of the Suffragette Charlotte Marsh. She wears the hunger strike medal and silver Holloway brooch representing her periods of imprisonment for militancy. Charlotte was one of the first suffragette prisoners to be force-fed whilst serving a term of imprisonment in Winson Green in 1909.
Handwritten on the back of the card is 'Sept 22nd, 1910. Birmingham. Many thanks for the very nice time in Leicester. I enjoyed it awfully much. Love to you and Miss Jones. C.A.L. Marsh'. It is addressed to Miss D. Pethick of the WSPU in Leicester.
Both Charlotte Marsh (1887-1961) and Dorothy Pethick were salaried Organisers for the Women's Social and Political Union. This postcard was sent to Dorothy whilst she was based in Leicester organising the WSPU general election campaign for 1910. The same month Charlotte organised a WSPU holiday campaign in Southsea and remained in Plymouth as WSPU organiser until 1912.
