Charm

National Museums of Kenya

National Museums of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya

Red, white and blue beads and cowries sewn on an oblong of cowskin and hang on a locally made chain. The charm (including beadwork) was made by a male craftsman called Ndoro who sells them to the medicine man who distributes them to his patients. This charm is a protection against illness under the ribs. If a person is ill under the rib he/she goes to the medicine man who provides this charm and the illness will go because it is caused by a bad spirit. It is worn by both sexes over one side of the shoulder and under the arm.
