This branch of the Chartered Bank was the first bank to open in Kuala Lumpur, in 1888.. It moved its premises to this site in 1891 but the original building proved to be inadequate and had to be replaced by this three-storey structure, attributed to A C Norman, in 1909. The building was renovated in 1996 and turned into the Natural History Museum.
