Cheek rouge

This material is the cheek rouge of the first half of the 20th century. There was no notion about cheek rouge as a fashion in Japan until Western cosmetics were imported. Cheek rouge was begun to apply to aim for the effect of making one’s face look smaller and lifting it up from modern times. However there was make-up to put vermillion on the face in a sense of protector against Evil in the Kofun period (from the middle of 3rd century to the 7th century). And there was also make-up to put Beni on whole cheek before applying Oshiroi for show the face bright in the Edo period (from the 17th century to the middle of 19th century).
