Created by the late Cherokee artist Mary Aitson, this double-walled basket uses commercial reed dyed with aniline dyes, exemplifying how modern materials meet traditional weaving in contemporary Native basketry. Aitson’s work is deeply rooted in Cherokee heritage, and she was widely recognized for educating youth and preserving her community’s cultural legacy through art.
Honored as both a Cherokee National Treasure and a Red Earth Honored One, Aitson’s artistry continues to inspire new generations to learn and carry forward Cherokee weaving traditions.
